Our first Kickstarter campaign in 2012 was a huge success! Thanks to our wonderful backers and friends, we made our initial Kickstarter goal plus two stretch goals. We are so grateful for the support and incredibly excited about the costumes ahead. And the outpouring of love and good wishes towards our project has been incredibly encouraging. It’s been a joy to connect with so many like-minded souls who love history, mythology, geekiness, and the sheer fun of creating a great costume.
NAMED SPONSORS: A special thanks to these generous supporters who backed our Kickstarter project at the $50 level or above. Thank you!
BUTTONS: We created a series of pinback buttons as thank-you rewards for our Kickstarter backers at the $25 level and above. Check out the full list of designs on our buttons page.
POSTER: As a thank-you for our sponsors at the $100 level and above, we created a “Timeline of Women in World History” poster, featuring all our queens and notable women.
The 2013 season of costumes
We have a total of 19 new costumes coming up in 2013: the 10 we announced in our initial Kickstarter launch, 7 additional costumes that our Kickstarter backers voted for, and 2 Special Request costumes commissioned by very generous Kickstarter backers. We’ll be publishing the new costume designs throughout the year as we finish them.
The first 10 costumes:
- Grace O’Malley, the Sea Queen of Connaught
- Anne Bonny and Mary Read, who sailed with the infamous Calico Jack
- Ching Shih (aka Zheng Yi Sao), the most successful pirate in history
- Marie Curie, recipient of two Nobel Prizes
- Grace Hopper, who invented the compiler (which is like saying she invented the wheel. Plus the alphabet. Plus fire.)
- Rosalind Franklin, whose work was central to the discovery of DNA
- Hypatia, the last great pagan philosopher and mathematician
- Queen Christina of Sweden, who shocked Europe with her crossdressing
- The Trung Sisters, queens and national heroines of Vietnam
- Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic
The 7 additional costumes voted in by Kickstarter backers:
We published a series of Costume Candidates posts to briefly introduce the many notable women and legendary figures under consideration, and our backers cast their votes in June 2013. The winners:
- The Morrigan, Celtic goddess of battle
- Baba Yaga, the scary witch of Slavic folklore
- Artemis, Greek goddess of the hunt, nature, animals, the moon, and childbirth
- Queen Mab, the English/Celtic fairy queen mentioned by Shakespeare
- Annie Oakley, the greatest sharpshooter who ever lived
- Hedy Lamarr, movie star and inventor of frequency hopping
- Queen Liliuokalani, the last queen of Hawaii
The 2 Special Request costumes:
- Lasiren, the Haitian mermaid goddess of the sea
